What would happen if a washed up 80s rock band moved in to your house? It happens to Brenda and Tim Dunkirk in Beside the Music.

Brenda's life is going nowhere fast. With her promotion at work out of reach and her husband putting off starting a family to run for office, she can't help but look back to her glory days. When nostalgia encourages her to write a fan letter to the bass player of her favorite 80s band, Hydra, she never expected an invitation to dinner and an unbelievable proposal.

When Hydra moves in, When Hydra moves in, Brenda imagines late night lyric writing sessions at her kitchen table and quickly gets swept up in the glamour of being the rock and roll muse for songwriter and bassist Keith Kutter. What she never imagined was the crowd of screaming fans on her front lawn, and her husband Tim leaving her and Hydra’s chaos. Brenda must choose, can she be one man’s wife and another man’s muse?

Beside the Music is an amped-up women's fiction novel that'll make you want to bang your head in a good way. If you like colorful characters, rock band exposes, and a lighthearted look at modern relationships, then you'll love BJ Knapp's tribute to old-school rock.

Buy Beside the Music to crank this fun-filled adventure all the way up to 11!

Beside the Music Can a Marriage Survive 80s Metal? eBook BJ Knapp

This story was everything i wanted it to be and more. Being a dedicated music fan myself, I loved the idea of connected and hosting a favorite rock band in your very own home while they record their new album. Who wouldn't? But, when fantasy becomes reality, Brenda and Tim get a lot more than they bargained for.

I love how the relationship between Brenda and Time develops. It is very plausible and has a huge dose of reality. The reality of living with aged rock stars seemed very believable as well.

This was an extremely fun, though not always uplifting, read. There are a lot of funny parts as well as the hurtful parts, but in the end, it's about life. And life is full of ups and downs. It's how you deal with them that makes or breaks you.

I would recommend this one to anyone who likes stories about musicians. I would definitely read more by this author.

Beside the Music Can a Marriage Survive 80s Metal? eBook BJ Knapp Reviews

BJ Knapp's novel pulls you in like a song with an infectious melody and a driving beat. With her great sense of humor and great pacing, Knapp keeps you guessing as she amp up the tension for her main character, Brenda, as she tries to pull off being muse to the rock star of her dreams, stay true to her marriage, and balance her work life as well. A thoughtful and fun read.
Who wouldn’t want to hang out with their 80’s rock icon? BESIDE THE MUSIC describes Brenda’s love for a band she loved and grew up called Hydra. A main member of the band, Keith, was her crush and she had the opportunity to host them in her house while they recorded a new album. A dream come true? It was not quite what the main characters expected. Brenda and Tim have their relationship tested when the group and entourage move in. I love reading Brenda’s thoughts and the books character development. You feel you really get to know them. The book was funny at times, heartbreaking at times and insightful at times (makes you change your mind about hanging out with your 80’s icon?). The band is everything you read about the excessiveness of the rock and roll world. I enjoyed the book and read it in just a few days. This would be that great summer, vacation read by the pool book. P.S. I really like the mother-in-law, so much drama. Thanks BJ Knapp, can’t wait to read more from you.
I was recommended this by a friend due to my vast interests in music, my love of the movie Almost Famous, and my enjoyment of a good book. The first thing I'll say is that this book kept me turning the pages quickly from start to finish- I was always wondering what was going to happen next, what could be discovered, how the story could develop. The characters are colorfully created and vividly described, as are the scenes that they take on. On several occasions I related personally to a conversation or situation that just transpired, and on a few occasions it struck my soul and affected me emotionally (which in my mind is the ultimate signal of whether a book- or any form of entertainment- possesses a higher quality) and therefore made an impression on me that was both memorable and enjoyable. In a world of a lot of fakeness, and even more accusations of fakeness, it was very refreshing to read a down to earth, genuine, and heartfelt story like Beside the Music.
When I read the premise of this book (a has-been metal band moves into a 35-year woman's home to record their comeback album, causing chaos and disrupting her life and marriage in the process), I was expecting a funny story with lots of rock and roll debauchery. Well, there was definitely some heavy metal hi-jinks, but not the humor I anticipated. Instead, what I found in this book was a poignant look at the nature and complexity of relationships, including those we have with our spouse, family, co-workers, and most importantly with ourselves. Yes, there were some amusing situations in the book, but they were not played for cheap laughs. Instead, what really carried this book for me was the authenticity of the conversations and interactions, especially between the lead character, Brenda, and her husband Tim. Those personal exchanges really anchored a story that kept me interested in the characters and in exactly how they would get themselves out of the heavy metal mess they found themselves in!
I love the premise of this novel - a fan sends a letter to a (nearly) has-been rock star and surprise! He answers her. The story is about the friendship that unfolds between the main character, Brenda, and Keith who used to be in a popular 80s band - but it's also about Brenda and her husband Tim's changing relationship. I found it both fun and sweet, and thoroughly engrossing. All the characters felt complicated and, well, real! I highly recommend it.
This was a good read about having your teenage fantasy come true. The problem is when you have an adult life and your fantasy is ruining all of it! Who of us wouldn't want to have our favorite rock band move in with us? It's not as pretty as it seems. This book had humor that I really enjoyed. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did!
'Beside The Music' was a fun read that kept me turning pages into the wee hours. I found the character's journeys and development compelling, and the author has a way of painting scenes so clearly I can't help but see them in my head. There were moments I was almost giddy, and others where I was actively cringing... I was surprised at how much I relateded to the characters in this unlikely situation. Ms. Knapp told a fantastic story on these pages, I can't wait to read whatever she's up to next!
